Newport Jazz Jam Sessions at The Blue Room

Newport Jazz presents: Jam Sessions @ The Blue Room

This is a space for all musicians to come together and perform in an inclusive, multigenerational setting. The jam sessions will feature a house band and curated jazz repertoire. Hosted by Leland Baker, Music Education Manager for the Newport Festivals Foundation.

Each session will be themed to focus on the music and legacy of a jazz artist; musicians are encouraged to play a tune written by that artist. A different jazz artist will be announced a week ahead of time to give musicians time to learn and explore that artist’s music.

Jazz artist theme on Wed. Aug. 28th:  STAN GETZ
Stan Getz (born Stanley Gayetski in Philadephia – February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as “The Sound” because of his warm, lyrical tone, with his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman’s big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as “one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists”.[1] Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he also helped popularize bossa nova in the United States with the hit 1964 single “The Girl from Ipanema”.

We invite musicians of all levels and ages to join each session. Non-performing patrons are also invited to attend and watch each session. NOTE: Backline is provided by the club, along with drums and piano, all other musicians are expected to bring their instruments.
